Finding Your Photographer

Are you looking for the perfect photographer for your special day?

There are thousands of photographers just in the Portland Metro Area, I mean there are hundreds of wonderful photographers in the Gorge itself! So how do you pick the photographer that is right for your special day?

With such a saturated market it may be overwhelming to know where to begin or to even know what to google. One good practice is to ask your venue if they have any preferred vendors. Most locations have a list of the vendors they use most often and your wedding planner can give you wonderful insight into how each photographer works in terms of punctuality and professionalism.

Another option is to contact one of the many photographers that I am sure you follow on social media. Think that instagram account has something to add to your big day? Reach out to them, google their ratings and look into their prices. With so many ways to connect these days there is nothing stopping you from booking the photographer of your dreams.

Once you have narrowed down a few candidates and narrowed your search in general, you can begin to reach out to each photographer. It is important to note the immediateness of their reply and the manner in which they communicate with you. Though a wedding is in many ways a very public experience, it is also extremely intimate and you want the person behind the lens to be someone you can trust and relax around.

Once you have a nice rapport you can begin to narrow down your options even further via prices and packages. Photographers range all over the board for pricing but you are likely going to be looking at $1,500 to $5,500 for their services. Packages are most often determined by hours that they are on site shooting, a larger package usually covers around 8 or 9 hours of service. A complete day of shooting has its perks of capturing you and your Bridal Party getting ready, the Ceremony, Cocktail Hour and Reception. Often a full day of shooting will require 2 shooters so that one photographer gets both parties getting ready. This is a very common practice and I encourage it. it is nice to know that there is always a photographer near.

If you are on a budget, you can limit your time with your photographer to as little as 2 or 3 hours but I recommend making cuts in all other areas of your wedding before limiting your photographer. The one element of your wedding that you will have forever is your photobook, it is worth it to invest in a longer hourly package not only for your memories but for your stress level as well. When you have more time to get photos done you are more relaxed and able to enjoy the day with your forever love.

With all that said our photographer spotlight this week goes to Shayla Renee Photography . Shayla and Todd have an outstanding portfolio with sweeping landscapes and soft, brilliant images. They are professional, kind, prompt and so easy to work with!

Good luck finding your photographer!
